Purpose and Scope

The Sheet Metal Shop Apprentice is in training to become a Technician who then fills an essential role in the execution of both construction and service projects by delivering timely, quality products from the shop to the field. They provide hands-on leadership to field crews and ensure jobs are completed on schedule and to specifications – from layout to field delivery. The Sheet Metal Shop Technician at times may also guide, coach, and direct field installation procedures of more complex components. Sheet Metal Shop personnel may at times be assigned to projects or tasks in other departments as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive at the shop on time and leave at the end of the designated workday.
  • Comply with and enforce Company policies as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Positively represent the Company through personal appearance, professionalism, and exemplary work performance.
  • Plan and organize work to meet priorities, goals and workforce-hour allocation.
  • Provide clear instructions to subordinates and ensure work is done correctly.
  • Perform all work accurately according to Company standards and industry practices.
  • Perform work according to applicable codes and drawings.
  • Ensure that change orders are communicated appropriately between the office and the field and that timely adjustments/changes are made as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence with safety regulations and policies and guide inexperienced workers in proper use of PPE and safe operation of hand and power tools.
  • Identify and implement cost-effective procedures and workflow as appropriate.
  • Properly care for and maintain Company-owned property, i.e. vehicle is maintained, tools, equipment, and materials properly secured and locked at the end of each day, etc.
  • Interpret and apply mechanical and structural blueprints during layout.
  • Implement solutions to problems by involving the effected trades/groups, gathering information and analyzing the situation.
  • Maintain a safe, cooperative, and healthy work environment.
  • Conduct standardized performance evaluations of assigned subordinates.
  • Organize the job and day to day operations – order materials, schedule equipment, and workforce in advance.
  • Participate in training to gain additional knowledge (formal and informal).
  • Coordinate work with other crews, subs and job site superintendent, as required.
  • Communicate appropriately with supervisors regarding job issues, requests for sick or vacation leave or other job-related matters.
  • Attend and participate in required meetings.
  • Assist with jobs/tasks within the Company to adjust for workflow changes.

Organizational Leadership

Sheet Metal Shop Apprentice and Technicians both report to the Sheet Metal Shop Foreman. 

Job Requirements

Education and Training – Vocational training in plumbing and piping or sheet metal beneficial although not required. Licensed trade professional highly desired although not required. Eligibility for a license or equivalent experience is required. Strong mechanical aptitude and desire to work with hands and machinery a must. Previous supervisory experience helpful.

Additional Skills or Requirements – Valid Virginia Driver’s License required along with an acceptable driving record as defined by our insurer.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform basic physical tasks normal to the construction industry, including but not limited to kneeling for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, crawling, lifting at least 50 lbs. and be able to work with arms above head level for sustained periods; must be able to work in hot and cold temperatures and adverse weather and job site conditions.

Job Type: Full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position

ScheduleTypically Mon – Th, 4 – 10s, 40 to 42.5 hours weekly. Hours may vary at times to meet project deadlines, including some infrequent Fridays, weekend, and/or evening hours. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times normal rate for anything more than 40 hours per week.

Salary: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour based on experience, certifications, and previous work performance
