POSITION OVERVIEW:  

The paint/wallcovering apprentice is an entry-level position focused on learning the skills and techniques required for commercial paint and wallcovering jobs.  This includes the application of various coatings to surfaces such as wood, drywall, steel, stone and block at a variety of interior and exterior work sites, the application of following paints: oil base, latex and epoxies and the application of vinyl, fabric, paper wall coverings.  The apprentice works under the supervision of experienced painting professionals to develop their expertise in this field.

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

    • Preparation of the Job and Work Surface –Responsible for careful and safe set-up of the materials at the work site, which could include setting up ladders or erecting scaffolding safely to perform tasks above ground level. Employee is responsible for thorough preparatory work of the surface(s); and cleanly filling nail holes, cracks and joints with putty plaster or appropriate material.  Will also smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, brushes or steel wool and remove old paint as necessary from the work surface.  Removal could include paint remover, scraper, wire brush, to prepare surfaces for painting, and employee is comfortable in using those tools.  May be required to remove old wallpaper and prep the surface for a clean application of the new material; and needs to be familiar with appropriate removal tools and products. 
    • Painting – Will use a variety of rollers, brushes and spray equipment on the job; and apply paints (oil base, latex and epoxy) to a variety of work surfaces including wood, drywall, steel, stone and block. Employee is responsible for knowing what level of preparation and paint application technique is the most appropriate for a given surface.
    • Paper Hanging – Will use a variety of rollers and brushes on the job; and apply a variety of vinyl, fabric and paper wall coverings to the different work surfaces. Employee is responsible for knowing what preparation, adhesive and application technique is the most appropriate for a given material and work surface.
    • Special Wall treatments – May be required to assist in the application of a variety of textured surfaces to walls and ceiling with trowels, brushes, or spray guns.
    • Clean-Up – Employee also protects surfaces, trimmings, fixtures and windows, etc. as he/she works through and completes the job. Employee is responsible for clean-up of the work site and putting tools and equipment back in its proper place.
    • Safety- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others on the job site.
    • Learning- Learn and apply paint/wallcovering techniques, including understanding different types of methods and techniques, and the safe operation of tools and equipment.
    • Teamwork- Collaborate with experienced drywall professionals and other construction team members to complete projects efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

In this position you will/ will have:

  • Ability to reliably work scheduled hours of 6am-3pm M-F.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (helpful, but not required.)
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced professionals.
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools used in the drywall trade is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Basic understanding of safety protocols and the importance of following them.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and E-Verify.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Be able to read and understand construction documents in English.
