Pilot Car Driver

POSITION SUMMARY

The pilot car driver is responsible for assisting the oversize load driver in navigating the DOT designated route in between jobsites.  As a pilot car driver, candidates are expected to coordinate with project managers, dispatch, as well as the oversize load driver to ensure safe transport of oversize mining machinery and heavy equipment.  Candidates will be responsible for studying permitted routes, as certain states & highways have different regulations which will require the candidate to either lead or follow the given oversize load.

Candidates will operate a company vehicle & are expected to employ and adhere to the companies safe driving practices.

In this role, the Pilot Car Driver will report to the Project Manager

This is a Part-Time Position – typically 1 to 3 days per week – overnight travel is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Must be willing to assist in plant set up and teardown when there is a layover between loads.
  • Must adhere to all safety policies
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must be aware of all aspects of load movement.
  • Discusses traffic routing plans and type of location of control points with Supervisor.
  • Must be able to identify potential problems with loads in terms of length, overhand or height to prevent problems or police stopping the transport.
  • Must be able to identify where all potential obstacles are on the roadways, including low passes, narrow roads and light-load-only streets.
  • Must be able to identify places that can help with an oversized vehicle's mechanical breakdown.
  • Must informs drivers of detour routes.
  • Must maintain a supply of roadside emergency tools, including cones, reflective vests and a basic mechanic's kit
  • Communicates effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations.  Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.  Monitor and discuss traffic flow problems with work crew and supervisor.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of permit transportation information when needed.
  • Performs all duties in an independent and expeditious manner with minimal supervision
  • Self-directed & self-motivated
  • Prompt and dependable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:

  • Must have or be able to obtain a Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO) Certification
  • Must maintain a valid driver license with an acceptable driving record when pilot car operation is required.
  • Ability to follow verbal directions
  • Accountability/Reliability - Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions and being dependable and trustworthy

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Certifications and above High School education a plus
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds regularly on a daily basis
  • Must have the ability to hear, speak and follow directions carefully
