Gravel / Grading Foreman

POSITION SUMMARY

The Gravel/Grading Foreman is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under their direction and control. This individual will serve as the front-line Safety/Production foreman for road construction projects.

In this role, the Gravel/Grading Foreman will report to the Project Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain proper communication with customers and estimators so they know when work is to be completed
  • Work with crew members and give them a work schedule, daily and long-range
  • Oversee all grading and gravel work and ensure work is done according to the specs
  • Manage equipment and employees
  • Coordinate workload with subcontractors working on project
  • Train and develop employees for advancement
  • Ensure equipment, trucks, materials, and people are scheduled weekly and monthly
  • Communicate with inspectors and give updates on changes as they happen to project manager
  • Read and communicate work orders
  • Maintain accurate and detailed field reports
  • Help manage customer expectations
  • Attend daily planning meetings
  • Adhere to all safety policies and ensure employees are doing the same
  • Wear and monitor employees for PPE use and discuss issues with anyone not complying
  • Check field logs to make sure field reporting must-haves are on report before approving
  • Get accurate measurements of tonnage and trucking for the next day’s work
  • Communicate any questionable areas on job with Estimators before proceeding
  • Recording a Daily Job Diary
  • Understand required productions and meet the goal
  • Submit timecards and applicable reports weekly
  • Have signed Work Change Directive prior to completing any additional or changed work from the plans
  • Making sure company rules are followed by crew
  • Hold a daily Safety meeting and record in a log
  • Report to Project Supervisor or Shop on damage and non-functioning parts of equipment
  • Ensure that normal servicing of the equipment is performed properly, and advise/assist the Field Service Mechanic as necessary
  • Operates motor vehicle and equipment necessary for completion of projects
  • Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace are required
  • All other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques relative to road/highway construction and maintenance
  • Knowledge of field safety
  • Ability to identify additional work not identified in the plans and specs
  • Ability to read engineering plans and blueprints
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with the crew
  • Flexibility: ability to work in a number of diverse locations is pertinent, as work locations may change daily
  • Expected hours: hours will vary by job, location, and season

Job Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience within the construction industry
  • 3 years field supervision experience is required
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 4 years of experience working with gravel and dirt
  • The ideal candidate must possess a valid Class D or CDL driver s license with a good driving record.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds regularly on a daily basis
  • Regular attendance and overtime are required.
  • Must be available for work at all times when required.
  • Requires good vision for close tolerance work and any night work that may be required.
  • Must have the ability to hear, speak and follow directions carefully.
  • Continually required to reach, pull, carry, grab, pull, and lift.
  • Must possess both good strength and good endurance as work is performed in all types of weather conditions.
