Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under their direction and control. Heavy Equipment Operators will work with either our Aggregate Production or Road Building crews.

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Aggregate Production Heavy Equipment:

-Loader (Cat 980,988 to feed crusher)

-Dozer (Cat D8, D9 to strip and reclaim pits)

-Scraper (Cat 627 to strip and reclaim pits)

-Excavator (Cat 345 to excavate gravel material)

 

Road Building Heavy Equipment:

-Loader (Cat 972 to load trucks)

-Dozer (Cat D8, D6 to shape roads & ditches)

-Motor grader (Cat 140, 160, 14, 16 to blade gravel on roadways)

-Packer (Tractor packer & Sheep’s foot)

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively perform operational tasks as assigned given their respective machine
  • Use Critical thinking and problem-solving techniques to overcome daily challenges on project sites.
  • Operate job site equipment safely
  • Perform service, safety checks, and minor repairs on machine, check oil and fluids
  • Create a safe work environment and lead by example
  • Submit timecards and applicable reports weekly
  • In this role, the Heavy Equipment Operator will report to the Foreman
  • Assist co-works to ensure that all equipment is safe and ready for operation at all times
  • Report to Foreman or Shop (in the absence of the Foreman) on damage and non-functioning equipment
  • Ensure that normal servicing of the equipment is performed properly, and assist the Field Service Mechanic as necessary.
  • All other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Candidate must be open to travel throughout the construction season.  Our operations are 100% portable and are primarily in MN, ND, and SD.
  • Candidate must submit to a pre-employment urinalysis as well as background check
  • Candidate must complete MSHA part46/48 8-hour refresher or 24-hour new minor training (whichever is applicable).
  • Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques relative to road/highway construction, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of field safety
  • Ability to read engineering plans and blueprints
  • Regular attendance and overtime are required
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with the crew
  • Able to follow direction from management
  • Flexibility to work in a number of diverse locations is needed, as work locations may change daily

Preferred Job Qualifications – Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience within the construction industry is a plus
  • 2 years heavy equipment operation experience (willing to train the right candidate)
  • 2 years of experience working with gravel and dirt work is a plus
  • The ideal candidate must possess a valid Class D or CDL driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Must be able to lift 75+ pounds regularly on a daily basis
  • Continually required to reach, pull, carry, grab, pull, and lift
  • Must possess both good strength and good endurance as work performed in all types of weather conditions.

Positions are non-union and seasonal dependent on weather conditions and workload; however, the typical schedule is March-November.  Candidates can expect to work 60 hours per week (12-hour shifts, Monday-Friday).  Exceptions may be made given weather delays and project deadlines.  Candidates must be able to work both day and night shift throughout the season, as crews alternate at times.
